Fingernail Growth ♡

I think a lot of people struggle with growing their nails out. I'm lucky enough to have lovely nail genes, but it still requires some effort to keep them in tact.

First, you need to start with all of your nails the same length. It's not cute to have some grown out nails along with some nails that you bite and some nails that are broken. Just cut them short and start over.

As far as making them grow faster, I don't think there's any way you can do that unfortunately. There are products that claim to make them grow faster but I think it mostly depends on your genes, diet, etc. But I do know that blood flow makes hair grow faster, so it could be the same for nails. If you're desperate, make sure to keep your hands busy and the blood flowing in them. Massage your scalp so you can simultaneously make your nails and hair grow, lol.

This advice may also come in handy if you're a nail biter. Much like quitting smoking, you need to keep your hands and mouth busy to kick this habit. And if you want long nails, you do need to stop biting them obviously. It's unsanitary anyway. Start chewing gum all the time or have hard candy on you to occupy your mouth when you get the urge to bite them. As for your hands, maybe take up knitting? Get a rubix cube? Carry crossword puzzles around? You get the gist.

Now, you need to keep your nails strong so they don't break. Especially if you're someone who gets acrylic nails. Acrylics are a great quick fix to have long nails but, in case you didn't notice, they file down the surface of your fingernail and then super glue plastic to it. Not the healthiest choice for your fingernails, it makes them really weak and thin. And you want strong, thick nails! So always make sure to have nail strengthener or hardener on them. As far as strengtheners go, I've never really tried one but I do enjoy Sally Hansen's Diamond Strength polish. It hardens nails while also preventing nail polish chipping, plus they come in pretty colors! You can paint it on by itself or as a top and/or base coat for nail polish.

Once your nails start growing past the nailbed is when they're most in danger of breaking. You have to be conscious of your nails at all times until you're accommodated with the idea of having them. You must be gentle in general, which you'll find out. Something as simple as slamming a car door too hard can break a nail in an instant. If you happen to just tear a nail and it isn't fully broken, a good quick fix is to cut a tiny tiny piece of a teabag, dab clear nail polish on the tear, and adhere the piece of teabag to mend the tear. Make sure it's flat and coat it with the clear nail polish.

There are certain vitamins you can take that supposedly strengthen nails, such as Biotin. I took it for a while and didn't notice any amazing results, I think because my hair and nails already grow pretty strong and quickly. Some people love it. I noticed that it made me break out badly and after some reasarch, I realized that it ups your oil secretion and that was why. So, if your skin is on the drier side then I would suggest it but if not, take at your own risk. Biotin works because just as oils are good for your hair, they're good for nail health. You could take the Biotin or maybe look into certain oils that are great to soak nails in!

Sorry I couldn't recommend many products in this blog, it's just that I really don't have much trouble at all with my nails so I haven't scoured for tips about it. But I hope that what I do know helped you!

  2. Could I recommend something? I've been using these vitamins (http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/nature's-bounty-hair-skin-and-nails-dietary-supplement-coated-caplets/ID=prod6063872-product) for about 2 years and they really work great! And they have Biotin in them as well. I don't think they've made my nails grow stronger but they've definitely grown more quickly I think. :)
